  • Notes
    • John's Cherokee mother was born likely in Union County NC and his family moved southward near the stateline of SC, according to family legend and family researchers. She married JOHN HENRY STEPHENS, who had migrated from St Augustine FL in the 1760s after fighting in the War. Due to Indian unrest they moved southward and probably died in Alabama.

John was born 1790, half blood Cherokee, very dark, black hair and black eyes, Columbus, North Carolina. He married Jane Tillman, and told his children stories of his Cherokee mother. Jane was a red haired Scot-Irish.
